First practical lesson and introduction to project

Introduction to project:
In this lesson we were given a brief and introduction to our project. Like our make up assignent, we have to create a contemporary Elizabethan hairsytle. We are going to learn several techniques that will help us to incorporate both Elizabethan and contemporary elements. At some point we will be given a partner and we will swap designs, so I will be designing a hairstyle for myself.
At the moment, I am totally clueless when it comes to hair so I cant wait to get started and learn new techiques.

In our first lesson we were taught how to do three different buns and three plaits. I was actually really nervous about this lesson as I have literally no experience with hair, but once the two hours were over I was feeling a lot more confident. I now actually look forward to hair lessons and can't wait to learn new techniques!

The first bun we did was a ‘flower bun’. This is where you divide the hair into four sections and then tease it round until it looks like a classic bun. This gives the same shape as a doughnut, but allows for extra styling and movement. I did struggle with this at first as I couldn’t seem to divide the hair into equal sections! The next bun we did was a ‘twist bun’- this is where you literally twist the hair and then wrap it into the desired shape. I really like this look and I can definitely use this for a period look. The final bun we did used the same technique as before, but instead of twisting the hair before wrapping it round you plait it. Again, this look was really quick and easy and could be the basis for a period hairstyle.

We then concentrated on plaits- we started with a standard plait, but everyone knew how to do them so we quickly moved onto French plaits. I have never been able to get the hang of them but after a couple attempts I’m a pro! This skill will be so valuable for this project as plaits were very common and a French plait will be a good way to create the popular harsh hair line. The final style that we did was a fish tail plait- I have always been so scared of these as they look so complicated but they are actually so easy an effective! I think I will definitely use this in one of my designs as it puts a very modern and fashionable twist on the classic plait.
